Changing A Live System

Bridge Heating & Gas Services Ltd carries out alterations to existing commercial gas pipework across Essex, Kent and London, from short tap-ins for additional appliances through to substantial reconfigurations supporting building extensions, plant room upgrades, or commercial kitchen fit-outs.

Gas Safe registered (199240), we bring over 20 years of commercial gas experience to alteration work specifically, projects where the priorities are doing the work safely, minimising downtime to existing gas users, and leaving the system properly tested and certified for ongoing use. All testing and commissioning is to IGEM/UP standards.

Alterations to existing pipework carry particular risk because they introduce new joints and load to a system that has typically been in service for years. Done correctly with proper isolation, sequencing, and testing, the work goes in cleanly and recommissions safely. Done badly, the consequences range from failed tightness tests to safety risk for occupants. The procedures and standards exist for good reason. We follow them on every job.

Common Alteration Requirements

We regularly assist clients with a variety of pipework alteration needs:

  • Heating system reconfigurations and layout modifications
  • Addition of new cooking facilities or commercial kitchens
  • Workshop equipment installations requiring gas supply
  • Building extensions and expansion projects
  • Tenant fit-outs and space reconfigurations
  • Equipment upgrades requiring modified gas supply
  • Relocation of existing appliances or plant

Our Alteration Process

1. Site Survey & Assessment

We begin with a comprehensive site survey. A qualified engineer will assess both the current installation status and the alterations required, including:

  • Current system capacity and pressure availability
  • Routing options and structural constraints
  • Impact on existing gas users during the work
  • Access requirements and working conditions
  • Regulatory compliance and approval requirements
  • Coordination with other trades and services

2. Detailed Specification

We then produce a comprehensive specification covering:

  • Pipe sizing calculations based on new load requirements
  • Materials selection appropriate for the application
  • Proposed routing and installation methodology
  • Required isolation points and safety devices
  • Testing and commissioning procedures
  • Timeline and phasing to minimise disruption to existing operations

3. Professional Installation

Once you approve the specification, the work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers to all relevant safety protocols and regulatory requirements, phased where necessary to keep existing gas users in service.

4. Testing & Commissioning

On completion of the physical work, we commission the modified system and carry out comprehensive safety testing: strength testing, tightness testing, and verification of correct operation throughout the system.

5. Certification & Documentation

You receive full certification documenting the alterations, test results, and compliance with all relevant standards.

A Common Issue We Catch Early

A pattern we see on alterations: a planned tap-in for a new appliance reveals the existing supply was already running close to capacity, or that historical pipework predates current standards and would fail tightness testing as-found. Caught at survey, this becomes a clear scope and quote. Discovered on site mid-job, it can mean an emergency design rethink, programme delay, and a difficult conversation with the contractor or client. We survey thoroughly to flag these issues early.

Legacy Pipework Decommissioning

Redundant pipework often results from alterations to existing installations. Bridge Heating & Gas Services Ltd will advise on the best course of action for redundant pipework. We can either:

  • Complete Removal: Physically remove redundant pipework from the site, ensuring proper disposal and restoration of affected areas.
  • Safe Decommissioning: Where removal is impractical, ensure pipework left in situ is fully and safely decommissioned, purged, capped, and documented.

Proper handling of legacy pipework prevents future safety issues and supports compliance with building regulations and gas safety standards.

Safety & Compliance

All alteration work is carried out in accordance with:

  • Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998
  • IGEM/UP/1, UP/1B, UP/2, UP/11 and related standards as applicable
  • Building Regulations Part J
  • Relevant British Standards and industry codes of practice
  • Local authority requirements and notifications

Ongoing Compliance

Once alteration work is signed off, we can bring the whole installation into a structured ongoing compliance programme. Our Annual Service Agreements bundle scheduled tightness testing, gas safety certification, and priority callout response, particularly useful where alterations have added complexity to an existing site.
