Planned Around Term Time

Bridge Heating & Gas Services Ltd specialises in commercial heating and hot water systems, with extensive expertise in the planned maintenance of systems in schools across both the public and private sectors. We understand the unique operational requirements and constraints of educational facilities.

Gas registered since 2003, we bring over 20 years of commercial heating experience across Essex, Kent and London. Our school clients include primary and secondary schools, academies, sixth forms, and independent schools: sites where heating downtime carries real consequences for learning, safeguarding, and the running of the building.

Planned Maintenance for Educational Facilities

Planned and ongoing maintenance of your heating system offers the best way to reduce the risk of sudden failures and emergencies that can cause significant disruption to students, teaching staff, and other personnel working at your premises.

In the educational environment, heating failures can have particularly serious consequences:

  • Disrupted Learning: Cold classrooms make effective teaching and learning difficult or impossible
  • Health and Safety: Inadequate heating poses health risks, particularly to younger children
  • Building Closures: Severe heating failures may require partial or complete building closure
  • Exam Disruption: Heating failures during examination periods create major complications
  • Staff Morale: Persistent heating problems affect staff satisfaction and performance
  • Regulatory Compliance: Schools must maintain minimum temperatures to comply with health and safety regulations

Working with School Facilities Teams

Bridge Heating & Gas Services Ltd works directly with facilities managers, bursars, and site teams at schools and colleges to plan and carry out regular programmes of scheduled inspections and maintenance. This collaborative approach helps schools reduce the risk of avoidable failures and plan maintenance around term time, so staff can focus on their core educational work with less disruption.

When something fails in term time, the priority is keeping the school open. We get the heating back on safely as quickly as the fault allows, isolate only what genuinely has to be isolated, and save the disruptive work for after school, half-term or the holidays. Where plant is nearing the end of its life, we give a straight repair-or-replace recommendation based on its age, parts availability and the cost of keeping it going, so the school or trust can budget for it rather than deal with a mid-winter breakdown.

Our Maintenance Programmes Include

  • Pre-term system checks before heating season begins
  • Regular in-term inspections with minimal disruption
  • Comprehensive servicing during school holiday periods
  • Safety device testing and verification
  • Multi-boiler cascade balancing where quoted, with BMS checks through our controls engineer
  • Reactive breakdown support when needed

A Common Issue We Catch Early

A frequent problem in larger schools: uneven heating across blocks, often traced to cascade boilers that have not been re-balanced after a pump or valve change. Picked up at a scheduled visit, this is a short fix. Left until staff start complaining mid-winter, it can mean a reactive callout, lost teaching time, and an awkward conversation with the Head.

Scheduling Around the Academic Calendar

Inspections and required maintenance can be programmed for weekends or school holiday periods when the school is at its quietest. Systems can then be worked on safely and thoroughly without inconvenience to students or staff. Predictable scheduling also means predictable budgeting: your facilities team plans work around the academic year rather than reacting to mid-term failures.

Typical Maintenance Scheduling Includes

  • Summer Holidays: Major servicing, system upgrades, and significant repairs
  • Half-Term Breaks: Routine inspections and minor maintenance
  • Weekends: Quick inspections and urgent preventive work
  • Inset Days: Work requiring building access but with fewer students present
  • Pre-Heating Season: Comprehensive checks before autumn term begins

Maintenance of Gas Interlock Systems

If your school has gas interlock systems in science laboratories or food tech rooms, we provide specialist maintenance services to ensure these critical safety systems operate reliably. When dealing with gas systems in any school environment, safety is always of paramount importance.

Our Gas Interlock System Maintenance Includes

  • Testing of all safety interlocks and emergency shut-offs
  • Verification of ventilation system integration
  • Gas detection system checks and calibration
  • Emergency procedure verification
  • Documentation for health and safety compliance
  • Staff guidance on system operation

Safeguarding & Site Access

Schools operate under safer recruitment policies. Andrew holds an Enhanced DBS certificate. The engineers attending and any role-appropriate DBS requirements are agreed with the site in advance. Certificates are available on request for facilities teams, bursars, or designated safeguarding leads.

We are familiar with the practical side of working on school sites: signing in and out at reception, wearing visitor or contractor ID, working to agreed access routes, and avoiding unsupervised contact with pupils. Work is typically scheduled around the academic calendar (see above) to minimise on-site presence during teaching hours wherever practical.

Quality Service Across the Region

All our work is carried out by Gas Safe registered (199240) engineers and backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee under our standard terms. We serve schools of all sizes throughout Essex, Kent and London, and offer Annual Service Agreements for schools wanting structured ongoing maintenance with priority callout response.
