Gas Pipework Design & Specification
Get Sizing Right First
Bridge Heating & Gas Services Ltd designs and specifies the gas pipework for the installations, extensions and replacement projects we carry out across Essex, Kent and London, from short additions to existing systems through to complete distributions serving multi-boiler plant rooms, catering kitchens and process installations. Our design work is for pipework we install ourselves; any wider design work is by separate agreement.
Gas registered since 2003, we bring over 20 years of commercial gas design experience to every project, working to IGEM/UP/1, UP/1B, UP/2, UP/11, UP/12 and related standards as applicable. We work directly with main contractors, M&E consultants, project managers, and end clients, delivering compliant designs that minimise programme risk on site.
Pipework design is regulated work where errors carry real cost: a missed sizing assumption or a route that does not account for accessibility can mean re-design at installation stage, contractor delays, and avoidable expense. Catching these at design stage is the entire point.
Collaborative Design Process
We collaborate closely with all project stakeholders to ensure the interests and needs of everyone involved are properly represented in the design. We work alongside:
- Project managers and lead contractors
- Surveyors and architects
- Property owners and developers
- Facilities managers and maintenance teams
- Consulting engineers and M&E design professionals
Comprehensive Site Survey & Analysis
Our detailed survey process balances stakeholder requirements with the technical realities of gas distribution. We assess:
- Building layout, services routing, and structural constraints
- Gas demand calculations and load profiles (including diversity for multi-appliance loads)
- Inlet pressure tier and available supply capacity
- Routing options, accessibility for testing and maintenance, and access for future works
- Integration with existing services and infrastructure
- Safety requirements and regulatory compliance
- Future expansion and modification potential
Detailed Design Specification
From our appraisal comes a comprehensive specification covering:
- Preferred routing: Optimised pipe routes that minimise installation costs while meeting safety, access, and maintenance requirements
- Pipe sizing calculations: Precise sizing based on gas demand, pressure drop, diversity, and future expansion
- Material specifications: Appropriate materials for each section considering environment, pressure tier, and longevity
- Component specifications: Valves, regulators, isolation points, filters, and safety devices specified to scope
- Installation methodology: Clear installation procedures and sequencing to minimise on-site disruption
- Testing requirements: Strength, tightness, and purge protocols to IGEM/UP standards
A Common Issue We Catch Early
A pattern we see in projects coming to us at late design stage: undersized supply pipework identified only at commissioning, when the appliance trips out under load and the fix is more expensive than getting the sizing right at the start. Catching this at design stage, by running proper diversity calculations and pressure drop analysis up front, saves a callback to the contractor and a difficult conversation with the client.
Technical Expertise & Standards
Our design work follows IGEM/UP/1, UP/1B, UP/2, UP/11, UP/12, and related standards, the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, and manufacturer specifications. Designs are delivered with full calculation backup, material schedules, and installation/testing methodology for the works we carry out.
For the life of the installation, we also offer Annual Service Agreements covering scheduled tightness testing, gas safety certification, and priority callout response, a natural follow-through from design delivery into structured ongoing compliance.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY
“Andrew maintains our heating systems at both sites and he's always quick to help when we need him. The systems are older and need someone who understands that – he gives good practical advice, is always happy to help via a phone call or email, and keeps everything running reliably. Good communication, sensible suggestions, and all the paperwork comes through promptly.”
“Bridge Heating & Gas Services provide professional servicing and compliance work with a real focus on safety – important for a museum open to the public. They service our warm air heating and radiant tube heaters, often working out of hours to make sure we can maintain a comfortable environment for our visitors and staff.”
“Bridge Heating & Gas Services provide a very high standard of planned maintenance for our communal Hot Water and Heating services. Working in a prestigious residential building requires reliability, discretion and attention to detail – all of which they deliver. Reporting is clear and comprehensive, suitable for both managing agents and residents, and we get all the compliance documentation we need without having to chase. I should also add that Bridge Heating and Gas Services have always been generous with free and useful advice throughout the year. As one who knows well the cost of good, professional service providers, I would describe their prices as reasonable and good value for money; I cannot recommend them enough!”
